Why study the seeds? What do they have to do with climate change and biodiversity? Why are we investigating them? ReSEED team discussed these questions with a group of students aged 15 to 17 who are participating in the event Verão na ULisboa 2019. The initiative is led by Universidade de Lisboa to provide an opportunity to meet and experience the pace and environment of academic life.
ReSEED hosted a three-hour activity at Instituto de Ciências Sociais – ULisboa on July 2, 2019, divided into two parts. In the first one, while talking about the circulation of cultivated seeds and the importance of preserving the diversity of plants, the students also tasted different products both originally cultivated in the new worlds and in the old world.
In the second part, the students were divided into 4 groups and played a quiz that crossed different topics: the history of plants, agro-biodiversity, cooking, food security and climate change.
ReSEED team aimed at showing the students that History – hand in hand with Biology, Agronomy and other areas – can contribute to responding to challenges of the present and the future.
